Postural Management Workshop

Postural Management Workshop

Aim:
This workshop aims to equip participants with the essential skills, knowledge, and competence required to assess and manage patients who would benefit from postural assessments, wheelchair prescription, and the use of positioning aids, cushions, and sleep systems. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the principles of 24-hour posture management, enabling them to appropriately position patients in both bed and wheelchairs to enhance comfort and prevent complications.

Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the rationale behind optimal positioning and its impact on patient health and well-being.
  • Develop an understanding of various postural aids and be able to adapt these tools to meet specific clinical needs.

Content:
The workshop covers key topics in postural management, including:

  • Mechanics and Biomechanics of Posture:
    • Understanding the anatomical and biomechanical principles that influence postural alignment.
  • Models of Posture:
    • Examining the various models and approaches to posture control, including active and passive components.
  • Control Components of Posture:
    • Identifying the muscular, skeletal, and neurological factors that contribute to postural stability and dysfunction.
  • Manifestations of Postural Impairment:
    • Common postural issues observed in individuals with neurological conditions, such as spasticity, scoliosis, and contractures.
  • Common Postural Problems in Sitting:
    • Recognizing and addressing typical issues such as pelvic obliquity, kyphosis, and asymmetry in wheelchair-bound patients.
  • Principles of Building a Stable Posture:
    • Techniques to establish a stable and functional posture for both sitting and lying, ensuring 24-hour care consistency.
  • Seating and Sleep Systems:
    • Overview of seating systems and sleep systems used at Holy Cross, including customized supports, positioning aids, and cushion systems.
  • Secondary Complications:
    • How poor posture management can lead to secondary issues such as pressure ulcers, respiratory problems, and joint deformities.
  • Customised Support Systems:
    • Understanding the principles and materials involved in creating tailored support solutions to meet individual patient needs.
  • Practical Demonstration:
    • Hands-on demonstrations of correct patient positioning in both wheelchair and bed settings (supine and side-lying positions).

Format:

  • Presentations: Core topics are presented to introduce key concepts and recent advances in postural management.
  • Demonstrations: Practical demonstrations of patient positioning in different settings.
  • Group Work: Interactive sessions where participants can work through clinical scenarios to apply knowledge.
