Safeguarding Adults and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Training

Aim:
This workshop is designed to ensure that staff in positions of accountability fully understand their responsibilities regarding the protection of adults at risk. It will equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to safeguard individuals effectively, ensuring that patients’ best interests are consistently protected, in line with the latest Care Act 2014 and Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) updates, which replace the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).


Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand their roles in recognizing, preventing, and addressing abuse in vulnerable adults.
  • Identify key factors that may contribute to abuse or neglect in various settings.
  • Respond appropriately to allegations or disclosures of abuse, ensuring that safeguarding measures are taken.
  • Understand the legal framework for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and the transition to Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS).
  • Identify when and how to apply DoLS or LPS to ensure compliance with regulations protecting individuals’ liberty.

Content:
This course will cover critical topics in safeguarding, including:

  • Definitions of Abuse:
    • Understanding the different types of abuse (e.g., physical, emotional, financial, neglect) and how they manifest in adult care settings.
  • Putting People First:
    • Exploring the principles of person-centered care and how this approach underpins safeguarding policies.
  • Organizational Cultures Conducive to Safeguarding:
    • Recognizing how a strong safeguarding culture within an organization can prevent abuse and create a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding Policies and Processes:
    • Reviewing up-to-date policies in line with the Care Act 2014, including the latest updates on Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS).
  • Key Principles of Safeguarding:
    • Examining the six principles of safeguarding: empowerment, prevention, proportionality, protection, partnership, and accountability.
  • Elements of Good Practice:
    • Practical strategies for implementing safeguarding procedures effectively, ensuring compliance with local and national standards.
  • Barriers to Reporting Abuse:
    • Identifying common barriers faced by staff and patients when reporting abuse, and exploring ways to overcome these barriers.
  • Action to Take in Response to Abuse:
    • Step-by-step guidance on how to respond to safeguarding concerns, including how to escalate issues and work with external agencies.

Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS):

  • Understanding DoLS and LPS:
    • Overview of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), ensuring that staff understand when and why restrictions are placed on individuals’ liberty in care homes and hospitals.
    • Introduction to the Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS), which replace DoLS, ensuring staff are aware of the key changes and their roles in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable adults.
  • Application of DoLS and LPS:
    • Practical steps for applying DoLS and LPS in practice, including necessary documentation, assessment processes, and compliance with legal standards.
  • Best Interests and Least Restrictive Practice:
    • Ensuring care plans are in the individual’s best interests, considering the least restrictive option in line with DoLS/LPS guidelines.
  • Case Law and Recent Developments:
    • Discussion of recent legal cases and the evolving landscape of DoLS/LPS to prepare staff for current and future safeguarding challenges.

  • Presentation: A structured presentation covering theoretical and practical aspects of safeguarding and DoLS/LPS.
  • Group Exercises: Interactive exercises to encourage discussion and understanding of safeguarding issues in different contexts.
  • Film Case Studies: Real-life scenarios presented through film, offering practical examples of safeguarding in action.
  • Reflection: Opportunities for participants to reflect on their own roles and responsibilities within safeguarding frameworks.

Evaluation of Learning:

  • Observation: Facilitators will observe participants during group exercises and case study discussions to assess their understanding and application of safeguarding concepts.
  • Feedback: Participants will receive feedback on their performance in practical tasks and discussions.
